Its not easy to find a restaurant in Philadelphia that has fun karaoke and excellent food. We've heard many good things about Yakitori Boy's upstairs entertainment and would have been content with mediocre sushi at a slightly inflated price. All we were looking for was a reliable place to grab a quick dinner in Chinatown before the auto show.
Not only were we pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, but the price was so low that we almost fell off our bar stools.
Our first course cost $1. No joke. Their Tuesday night special is $1 skewers. The choices range from the ordinary like grilled asparagus to the extraordinary like bacon and quail eggs. We weren't quite adventurous enough to try the quail eggs, so we went with a pork sausage skewer and a chicken and scallion skewer. Both were delicious and the perfect way to start a multi-course meal.
We opted next for a bunch of sushi rolls. Our favorites out of about 6 different ones were the Spicy Tuna roll, the Mexican roll, and the Futo Maki roll. The Spicy Tuna was fresh and tender and certainly not too fishy, as can be the problem at cheaper sushi joints. The Mexican roll had a tempura crunch and chili powder on the outside that really complemented the tuna and cucumber inside. The best part about eating a spicy sushi roll is that no matter how much spice is inside, and how much wasabi you add yourself, the white rice always helps to soften the blow. On the non-spicy, Futo Maki roll, avocado, cucumber and egg were combined with Kanpyo(calabash shavings) for a smooth yet crunchy combination.
We really enjoyed the quiet atmosphere at the bar and the unrushed, unintrusive service. All around a pleasant dining experience.
